The ACL ruptures are common in the elderly and obese animals, but they also can happen to young growing animals with great physical activity. In the recent past many of these animals were only treated by affected ligament replacement surgery, which meant high costs and risks involved in the surgery with general anesthesia. For over two decades I practice in Clínica Veterinária das Antas the application of medical laser therapy with initially unexpected and excellent results.
In the current clinical case, I treated a German Shepherd, about 1 year old, which had begun to limp on the left hind leg. with no support for about one week, which started after a long walk. The orthopedic and neurological examination have revealed that only the pain in charge and on the side of the left tibial plateau, was compatible with an increase in the "drawer" movement, suggestive of partial ACL rupture.
I started biweekly treatment with Medical Laser and it was also recommended to restrict the physical activity of the dog. As the result, the Sheppard got an early support after the 3rd session and it was discharged after the 5th session. On this occasion the dog could perfectly supported the left hind leg and did not have any pain.
Please note that this non-invasive, completely painless application that does not require animal sedation and reduces the cost for the owner. Is undeniably present and future technique for the treatment of partial ruptures of ACL.
